I have a confession to make. There is another form of garden I have dreamt of growing even longer than a butterfly garden. A moon garden. You fill the garden with white flowering plants, including some that only bloom and/or emit fragrance at night. And you fill in spaces with shrubs and plants that have white, silver or bright green leaves. At night, by the light of the moon, the garden glows.
My kids are really pushing me to start this garden. But I have really struggled because most of the plants I read about are iffy to grow in Florida. So as we begin this garden, we will let you know what plants work and which don’t in case you live in a warm climate like me.
In the moon garden, we will try and go native and Florida-Friendly, but I will probably make more exceptions for wow factor. And this Cat’s Whisker’s is one of the non natives I am trying out. It is originally from eastern Asia. It comes in white and lavender blooms. It is a tender plant, so I might get lucky and it will live many years, or it might die off.
Luckily, this plant is cheap to buy at local nurseries, and is easy to grow from cuttings. So I am starting cuttings now in case. But I sure hope this plant makes it a long while. Look at what a cute shape it is taking.
I am finding that Cat Whisker’s needs water, faster than its neighbors. But a little soak, and it pops back up full of life ready to thrill.
Oh and by the way, it is from the mint family. So I am noticing it wanting to spread out a bit, then point upward. And it has no major pest problems.
