I really get a kick out of plant names sometimes. When you go to a local nursery with your kids, the names certainly help them stay interested too. That is how this beauty came to live in our butterfly garden.
This is a Lions Ear plant. It is not native, but promoted for butterfly gardens because pollinators LOVE the bold mango color. So do I!
This is a drought tolerant perennial. So if you have a spot in the garden where the sprinklers or soaker hose misses, this could be your plant! It will grow in part shade (our garden is proof) but it really likes full sun.
In the winter when very little else bloomed, we found these buds.
I’ve read you can also easily propagate from cuttings. I am trying now, and will let you know.
Our kids get a kick out of saying we have a lion in the garden. Hopefully you will too.
